This Maven is a thought leader across the global Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. Through his award-winning experiences with Building Information Modeling (BIM), Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), he has developed a deep understanding of the balance between new process, technology, and team culture necessary for successful implementation. He can provide deep technical knowledge and agnostic feedback on several AEC technology platforms including Autodesk Revit & Navisworks, Tekla, Procore, Bluebeam, and others. However, his current focus and expertise is on digital collaboration strategy inside AEC firms and large Design-Build project teams.
SpectrumAEC connects real problems with real solutions by focusing on your most important asset: People. We are People First. We challenge the traditional approach that puts technology first, process second, and people third. Our people-first approach means developing new processes to fit your team's unique needs before implementing the technology that best suits those needs. We Seek to Understand. Technology may make our lives easier, but that doesn't mean technology adoption is easy. We dive in early with your to identify and address the root causes that often lead to adoption failure. We Embrace Conflict. Protecting our stakeholder positions should never be more important than addressing issues that threaten project success. We define the difference between disruptive conflict and constructive conflict to shape successful behavior. We Foster Bidirectional Mentorship. Experienced professionals have tremendous wisdom and knowledge, but can also bring bad habits; young professionals bring fresh perspectives and new technology, but can often reject the advice of their elders. We work with teams to accept differences and combine strengths, delivering a value that is greater than the sum of its parts. We've Got Your Back. Whether you're engaged with an existing technology partner, or searching for the right one, we are your trusted advisor through the vendor selection and negotiation process. We provide honest recommendations because our first priority is your success. We Measure Your Success. Measuring the return on investment of technology adoption is difficult; and focusing on it too much often results in failure. Instead, we measure the changes in process and behavior and celebrate the incremental steps along the journey to adoption.
Nathan has been a full-time member of DPR's Innovation Team where he has worked with over 100 project teams; ranging from small office renovations in Austin, Texas to a $3 Billion Airport Terminal in Abu Dhabi. Through these experiences, Nathan has observed a common theme across project teams in design and construction: that technology alone cannot solve the challenges within the AEC industry. Outside of DPR, Nathan is an evangelist for industry progression. He presents his unique perspective through conferences presentations across the US and internationally, including Autodesk University, BIM Forum Canada, and ThinkBIM UK. Within the US, Nathan provides support and leadership for local grassroots organizations like the CPCoalition and Virtual Builders, Inc.
Sutter Medical Center Castro Valley •Developed a lean workflow for concrete pour phasing and sequencing with model based custom layout drawings allowing all pertinent information to be shown on one drawing; Implementation of this workflow resulted in a 10% increase in field productivity and better quality control. •Took fabrication level exterior skin modeling from concept to reality to identify design scope gaps, constructability issues and water intrusion risks. Through this process, over 50 connections were redesigned in the model prior to panel fabrication. •Submitted for and awarded both the 2010 Tekla North America and Global award for BIM collaboration. Sutter Alta Bates Summit Medical Center •Introduced "Dynamic Detailing" workflow to the rebar modeling industry, where additional information like pour joint and penetration locations are communicated directly to the detailer via model information. This lean work flow allows the detailer to avoid clashes rather than model in a silo and wait for clash detection. •Developed and implemented a more efficient workflow for online collaborative submittal review using Bluebeam Studio, resulting in higher quality reviews in 33% less time while remaining completely electronic. •Implemented integration between Trimble Total Stations and Tekla Structures to quickly and accurately collect point location information to as-built the model, and also provide layout from the model to the field. This increase in speed and accuracy to capture field information was critical to the project's ability to save 31 schedule days during foundation construction. •Pushed the use of 4D models at DPR from mainly a proposal tool to a detailed schedule analysis tool using Synchro. The concept of trade specific color-coded 4D analysis is now being implemented at LPCH • Submitted for and awarded the 2011 Tekla North America award for BIM collaboration.
•Solicited and analyzed bids from subcontractors and prepared recommendations to lead estimator. •Provided take-off information to estimating team using On-Screen Takeoff.
•Adapted to construction industry culture on a fast-paced, 12 week build out of a data server suite •Provided general project engineer duties like RFIs, submittal review, punch list tracking, etc.
